About

An independent publication about equality in Australia.

Equality Rights Australia publishes guides and research on pay, superannuation, parental leave, child care, unpaid care and housing. We build every page on official Australian data and link each figure to the release it comes from.

What we cover

We currently publish on gender equality, pay & superannuation, parenting & care and housing & homelessness. We add new topics only once we have researched and checked enough pages to cover them properly.

We write for people who need a reliable answer: workers checking an entitlement, parents planning leave, students, journalists and anyone comparing what different official sources say.

Editorial standards

  • Every figure on a page links to the official release it comes from.
  • We name the period each figure covers, because official data is often a year or more old by the time it is published.
  • Where two official measures disagree, such as the ABS and WGEA pay gap figures, we show both and explain why they differ.
  • Guides explain how a system works. They are general information, not legal or financial advice, and each one says so.
  • Each page shows the date we last checked its figures.

How we check figures

Before a page goes live, we:

  1. Take each figure from the original release, such as an ABS spreadsheet, a WGEA report or an ATO data table, not from news coverage or summaries.
  2. Recalculate it from the underlying data where we can. For example, we rebuild the national gender pay gap series from ABS average weekly earnings.
  3. Check it against a second official page where one exists.
  4. Store it with its source, so the same figure appears the same way everywhere on the site.
  5. Compare every published figure with the source text one more time.

When we calculate a figure ourselves, such as the difference between two published numbers, the page says so and names the inputs.
